Things to Do in Puerto Morelos: The Complete Local Guide

Puerto Morelos sits between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, but it feels very different from both.

It's smaller, slower and much easier to experience without feeling like you're moving from one major tourist attraction to another. You have the Caribbean and the reef on one side, jungle and cenotes on the other, and a town that's still small enough to explore without needing an itinerary for every hour.

There are the obvious things to do in Puerto Morelos, like snorkeling and visiting cenotes, but there's also scuba diving, fishing, jungle adventures, wellness, spiritual experiences, local food, photography, proposals and plenty of ways to simply slow down and enjoy being here.

If you're deciding what to do during your Puerto Morelos vacation, start here.

1. Snorkel the Puerto Morelos Reef

If you do one ocean experience while you're here, snorkeling the reef should be high on the list.

Puerto Morelos sits beside the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, and local snorkeling trips take you by boat into the protected marine area with a guide.

Depending on conditions and where you snorkel, you may see coral formations, tropical fish, rays, barracuda, sea turtles and other Caribbean marine life.

You don't need to be an experienced snorkeler. If you're nervous in the water or travelling with children, mention that when arranging your experience so you can choose an option that fits your group.

Private snorkeling can also be arranged for couples, families and groups who prefer having the experience to themselves.

2. Swim in a Cenote

Leave the Caribbean behind and head inland and you'll find a completely different landscape.

The limestone beneath the Yucatán Peninsula contains an enormous network of underground freshwater systems, with cenotes creating natural openings into that world.

Some cenotes are completely open and surrounded by jungle. Others are partially enclosed or located inside caves with rock formations overhead.

And not every cenote experience needs to involve a giant adventure park.

You can look for somewhere quiet to swim, explore caves, choose something family-friendly or combine the cenote with a more adventurous day.

If you're not sure which kind suits you, start by deciding what you actually want from the experience rather than searching for the single “best” cenote.

3. Explore the Ruta de los Cenotes

The Ruta de los Cenotes runs inland from Puerto Morelos through the jungle and is one of the most interesting areas to explore outside town.

Along the route you'll find cenotes, caves and different jungle experiences.

You can make the cenote itself the focus of your day or combine several activities depending on how adventurous you want to be.

This area deserves more than simply being treated as somewhere to stop for a quick swim. The landscape inland from Puerto Morelos is a completely different part of the region from the Caribbean coast.

We'll be creating a complete Ruta de los Cenotes guide as part of our Puerto Morelos travel guides, so if this is one of the main reasons you're visiting, keep exploring the Bespoke blog.

4. Ride ATVs and Zip Line Through the Jungle

If you're looking for something more active, spend a day in the jungle.

Adventure experiences around Puerto Morelos can combine ATVs, zip lines, cenote swimming, caves and other activities.

Different experiences have different levels of intensity. Some are designed for families and first-time visitors, while others put more emphasis on the adventure.

You also don't need to buy the biggest package simply because it includes the most activities.

If all you really want is ATVs and a cenote, that's useful information.

If you want the entire day of zip lines, ATVs, swimming and jungle, that's useful too.

5. Go Scuba Diving

If snorkeling gives you a look at the reef from above, scuba diving lets you experience the Caribbean very differently.

Puerto Morelos has access to reef diving as well as other dive experiences throughout the surrounding Riviera Maya.

Certified divers can explore different sites depending on experience level, conditions and what they're interested in seeing.

If you're new to diving, ask about options appropriate for beginners rather than assuming scuba is only for experienced divers.

The important part is choosing an experience that matches your actual ability and comfort in the water.

6. Go Fishing in the Caribbean

Fishing has been part of Puerto Morelos since long before tourism became one of the town's major industries.

Getting out on the water with a local captain gives you a different perspective on the Caribbean and the fishing history of the area.

Fishing experiences can work for experienced anglers, complete beginners, families and private groups.

You don't necessarily need to know what kind of fishing you want to do before you inquire. Your group, experience level, season and what you want from the day can help determine the right option.

7. Spend a Day at the Beach

Not everything needs to be booked.

Puerto Morelos has a long Caribbean coastline where you can swim, walk, read, find somewhere for lunch or spend a few hours doing very little.

If you've packed your trip with excursions, intentionally leaving a beach day open can be one of the best decisions you make.

Weather and ocean conditions change throughout the year, so some days will be calmer than others.

If you're deciding when to visit, read our Puerto Morelos Weather Year-Round guide to understand how the seasons change here.

8. Walk Around the Puerto Morelos Town Square

The beachside centre of Puerto Morelos is small enough to explore on foot.

Walk around the main square, head toward the pier, wander through the surrounding streets, stop somewhere for coffee or lunch and see what you find.

You don't need a guided tour to enjoy this part of town.

One of the easiest ways to experience Puerto Morelos is simply leaving yourself enough time to walk around without having somewhere else you need to be.

9. Eat Your Way Through Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos has a surprisingly varied food scene for a small town.

Beachside you'll find seafood, Mexican food, tacos, cafés, international restaurants and places for drinks around the main square and surrounding streets.

Cross Highway 307 into La Colonia and you'll discover another side of the food scene, with more local restaurants, taco spots and casual places away from the main tourist area.

Our Puerto Morelos Restaurants & Nightlife Guide goes deeper into where and how to experience evenings here.

10. Visit La Colonia

Many visitors spend their entire vacation on the beachside of Puerto Morelos without realizing how much of the town exists on the other side of Highway 307.

La Colonia is more residential and gives you a different look at everyday Puerto Morelos.

You'll find restaurants, shops, markets and local businesses throughout the area.

You can travel between the beach and La Colonia by taxi or local colectivo.

11. Book a Massage or Wellness Experience

Puerto Morelos can be adventurous, but it can also be somewhere you come to slow down.

Massage, bodywork, Reiki, sound healing and other wellness experiences can be incorporated into your stay without needing to turn your entire vacation into a retreat.

Maybe you want a massage after travelling.

Maybe you're here because you've been exhausted for six months and don't actually need another excursion.

Maybe you want to intentionally create a day around feeling good in your body.

Wellness can be part of the trip rather than something separate from it.

12. Experience a Temazcal or Spiritual Ceremony

For travellers interested in something deeper than sightseeing, Puerto Morelos and the surrounding area are home to spiritual practitioners and experiences that can become a very different part of your time here.

These may include temazcal, energetic cleansing, sound, ceremony and other ancestral or spiritual practices.

These experiences aren't something we'd recommend choosing simply because they look interesting in a vacation photo.

Read about what the experience actually is, understand its intention and choose something you're genuinely drawn toward.

13. Create a Private Day Around What You Actually Want

You don't always need to choose a prebuilt excursion.

Maybe you want to snorkel in the morning and visit a cenote afterward.

Maybe you're travelling with children and don't want a twelve-hour tour.

Maybe you want something private.

Maybe half your group wants adventure while the other half wants absolutely nothing to do with an ATV.

Private and custom experiences allow you to start with the people travelling rather than forcing everyone into the same standard package.

14. Plan a Proposal in Puerto Morelos

If you're travelling as a couple and planning to propose, Puerto Morelos gives you more options than simply dropping to one knee at a crowded resort.

A proposal might happen barefoot on the beach, beside a cenote, in the jungle, during a private dinner or as part of an experience your partner thinks is something completely different.

Photography, video, flowers, décor, music, transportation and celebrations afterward can all be built around the moment.

15. Experience an Intimate Mayan Wedding

Puerto Morelos can also become the setting for something much bigger.

For couples looking for an intimate wedding that feels connected to Mexico rather than a conventional resort wedding package, a Mayan ceremony can become the centre of the experience.

Beach and jungle settings, spiritual ceremony, food, music, accommodation, photography, transportation and experiences for guests can all become part of the wider wedding trip.

This works particularly well for smaller groups where the wedding isn't only one event. The entire stay can become part of the celebration.

16. Take a Day Trip to Playa del Carmen

Puerto Morelos is quieter than Playa del Carmen, but Playa is close enough to visit without moving hotels.

Spend a day shopping, eating, walking around or experiencing the busier atmosphere, then return to Puerto Morelos afterward.

If you're travelling independently, the colectivo is one of the cheapest ways to make the trip.

17. Don't Plan Anything

This deserves a place on the list.

You do not need to turn Puerto Morelos into a checklist.

Wake up.

Go for coffee.

Walk to the beach.

Decide you're hungry.

Find somewhere to eat.

Swim.

Have a nap.

Go somewhere for a drink.

Some of the best days here aren't particularly impressive on paper.

That's part of why people like Puerto Morelos.

How Many Days Do You Need in Puerto Morelos?

That allows you to choose a few bigger experiences while still having time for the beach, restaurants and days where you don't have to be anywhere at 8 a.m.

If you're still putting the whole trip together, read our How to Plan Your Puerto Morelos Vacation →

It covers weather, where to stay, transportation and the practical side of planning your time here.
