How to Take the Colectivo From Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen
Taking a colectivo from Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to travel between the two towns without a car.
The trip itself is straightforward once you understand where to catch the colectivo. The part that can confuse first-time visitors is that the Playa del Carmen colectivos travel along Highway 307, not through the beachside centre of Puerto Morelos.
Here's how to make the trip from Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen.
Where Do You Catch the Colectivo in Puerto Morelos?
The colectivos travelling between Cancun and Playa del Carmen use Highway 307.
If you're staying in the beachside part of Puerto Morelos near the main square, you'll first need to travel west toward the highway.
You can take a local colectivo from the beachside area toward La Colonia and Highway 307, or take a taxi if you want the easiest option.
Once you reach the highway, you'll need to be on the southbound side heading toward Playa del Carmen.
This is important. Cancun is north of Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen is south.
How Do You Know Which Colectivo to Take?
Look for a colectivo travelling toward Playa del Carmen.
Before getting in, simply ask the driver:
¿Va a Playa?
This means, “Are you going to Playa?”
If the answer is yes, get in and find an available seat.
Colectivos are shared transportation, so the van may stop several times along Highway 307 as passengers get on and off.
How Long Does the Colectivo Take From Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen?
The drive from Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen generally takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic and how many stops the colectivo makes.
Allow additional time for getting from the beachside area of Puerto Morelos to Highway 307 and waiting for the colectivo.
If you have a reservation or tour in Playa del Carmen at a specific time, give yourself plenty of extra time rather than planning around the shortest possible journey.
How Much Is the Colectivo From Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen?
Colectivos are one of the most affordable ways to travel along the Riviera Maya.
The exact fare can change, so we don't recommend planning your trip around a price you found online months before travelling.
Bring Mexican pesos and preferably smaller bills.
If you're unsure of the current fare, you can ask:
¿Cuánto cuesta a Playa?
This means, “How much does it cost to Playa?”
You'll generally pay the driver when you get off.
Where Does the Colectivo Drop You in Playa del Carmen?
The colectivo will take you into Playa del Carmen, but remember that it isn't a private taxi taking you directly to your hotel, restaurant or beach club.
Once you arrive, you may need to walk or take a taxi to your final destination.
Before leaving Puerto Morelos, open your destination in Google Maps so you understand where you're going once you arrive.
If you're visiting somewhere outside central Playa del Carmen, check whether getting off before the final stop makes more sense and confirm your destination with the driver.
Can You Take the Colectivo Back to Puerto Morelos?
Yes.
The return trip works essentially the same way.
You'll take a colectivo heading north toward Cancun and tell the driver you're getting off at Puerto Morelos.
You can say:
Puerto Morelos, por favor.
Remember that the highway colectivo will leave you near Highway 307 rather than taking you all the way back to the beachside town.
From there, you can take a local colectivo or taxi back toward the beach.
What Time Do Colectivos Run?
Colectivos travel frequently during the day, but they aren't something we'd plan around using a precise tourist timetable.
Frequency can vary with the time of day, demand and traffic.
For a normal day trip to Playa del Carmen, this usually isn't a problem. If you're travelling very early in the morning or late at night, consider confirming your transportation options beforehand rather than assuming a colectivo will be available exactly when you need one.
Can You Take Luggage on the Colectivo?
Colectivos are designed primarily for passengers rather than travellers carrying large amounts of luggage.
If you have a backpack or small bag, it's usually manageable.
If you're travelling with several suitcases, beach equipment or a large group, a taxi or private transportation will generally be much more comfortable.
The vans can become crowded, and there may not be dedicated luggage storage.
Is the Colectivo Safe for Tourists?
Colectivos are a normal part of everyday transportation in the Riviera Maya and are used by locals, workers and visitors.
As you would when using public transportation anywhere, keep your belongings with you and be aware of your surroundings.
The biggest challenge for most first-time visitors isn't safety. It's simply understanding where to get on and off.
Keep your destination open on your phone, confirm with the driver that you're heading toward Playa del Carmen and give yourself enough time.
Once you've done it once, the system becomes much easier to understand.
Colectivo or Taxi to Playa del Carmen?
The colectivo is the better choice if your priority is keeping the trip inexpensive and you're comfortable using shared transportation.
A taxi or private transfer is easier if you're travelling with luggage, have several people in your group, need door-to-door transportation or have somewhere you absolutely need to be at a specific time.
For many travellers, the colectivo is perfect for a casual day trip to Playa del Carmen.
You can spend the day exploring, eating, shopping or visiting the beach and then take another colectivo back toward Puerto Morelos.
