How to Take the Colectivo in Puerto Morelos: Routes, Prices & Local Tips
If you're staying in Puerto Morelos without a car, colectivos are one of the easiest and most affordable ways to get around. They're used every day by locals and can take you between the beach, La Colonia and Highway 307, or farther to Playa del Carmen, Cancun and other places along the Riviera Maya.
They can feel a little confusing the first time you use one because there isn't always an obvious schedule or traditional bus stop. Once you understand how they work, they're actually pretty simple.
What Is a Colectivo?
A colectivo is a shared van or small public transportation vehicle that travels along a set route. Unlike a taxi, it doesn't take you directly to your destination. You get on along the route, tell the driver where you're going and get off at the closest stop.
You'll generally pay when you get off. Carry Mexican pesos and, ideally, smaller bills or coins.
There are two systems that are especially useful when staying in Puerto Morelos: the local colectivos that travel within town and the larger vans that travel along Highway 307 between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
Taking the Local Colectivo in Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos is divided by Highway 307. On the east side is the beach, main square and seaside town centre. On the west side is La Colonia, where you'll find more local restaurants, shops and everyday services.
Local colectivos connect these areas and are an inexpensive way to travel between the beach, La Colonia and the highway.
If you're staying near the beach, you can catch a colectivo around the town centre and take it toward La Colonia and Highway 307. You can also use one in the opposite direction if you're staying in La Colonia and want to head toward the beach.
Local fares are inexpensive and can change occasionally, so having small pesos with you makes things easier.
Taking a Colectivo From Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen
To travel from Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen, you'll first need to get to Highway 307.
If you're staying beachside, take a local colectivo or taxi toward the highway. From there, you'll want to be on the side of Highway 307 heading south toward Playa del Carmen.
Look for a van marked Playa del Carmen or ask the driver before getting in. A simple “¿Va a Playa?” is usually enough.
The trip generally takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic and the number of stops along the way. Colectivos may stop at different points along Highway 307 to pick up and drop off passengers.
It's one of the least expensive ways to travel between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen and a good option if you're travelling light and aren't working around a strict schedule.
Taking a Colectivo From Puerto Morelos to Cancun
Going to Cancun works essentially the same way, except you'll travel north on Highway 307.
From Puerto Morelos, get to the highway and wait on the Cancun-bound side. When a colectivo approaches, you can flag it down and confirm with the driver that it's going to Cancun.
You can simply ask:
¿Va a Cancún?
This means, “Are you going to Cancun?”
The journey usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes, although traffic entering Cancun can make it longer.
Can You Take a Colectivo to Places Along Highway 307?
Yes, and this is one of the most useful things to know about colectivos in the Riviera Maya.
If you're visiting somewhere located along Highway 307 between Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen, you may be able to take a colectivo and get off close to your destination.
Tell the driver where you're going when you get in. If you're unfamiliar with the area, it's also worth opening the location on your phone so you can follow your progress.
Keep in mind that a colectivo may leave you along the highway rather than directly at the entrance to your final destination. Depending on where you're going, you may still need to walk, take a taxi or arrange another form of transportation for the final part of the trip.
For cenotes, jungle experiences and more remote locations, it's worth checking exactly where the colectivo will leave you before deciding whether it's the best transportation option.
How Do You Get the Colectivo to Stop?
You don't need much Spanish to use a colectivo.
When you're waiting along the route, watch for the van and raise your hand to signal that you'd like to get on.
When you're getting close to where you want to leave, you can tell the driver:
Aquí, por favor.
This means, “Here, please.”
You may also hear locals say “Bajan” to let the driver know someone wants to get off.
If you aren't sure where your stop is, tell the driver your destination when you get in. In many cases, they'll let you know when you've arrived. Keeping your destination open on Google Maps can also make the first trip much easier.
How Much Does the Colectivo Cost in Puerto Morelos?
Colectivos are one of the cheapest transportation options in Puerto Morelos and the Riviera Maya.
Local trips within Puerto Morelos are generally only a small amount of pesos, while trips along Highway 307 to Cancun, Playa del Carmen or other destinations cost more depending on the distance.
Fares can change, so rather than relying on an exact price you found online months before your trip, carry pesos and ask the driver if you're unsure.
Cash is the easiest option, and small bills and coins are especially useful.
What to Know Before Taking a Colectivo
Colectivos are simple once you've taken one, but there are a few things worth knowing before your first trip.
They can become crowded, particularly around commuting hours, and there may not be much room for large luggage. If you're arriving with several suitcases or travelling as a large group, arranging transportation will usually be much easier.
There isn't always a strict timetable. Vans generally run frequently during the day, but wait times vary depending on traffic, demand and the route.
Most importantly, make sure you're standing on the correct side of Highway 307 for the direction you're travelling. Cancun is north of Puerto Morelos. Playa del Carmen is south.
And don't be afraid to ask. A simple “¿Va a Playa?”, “¿Va a Cancún?” or showing someone the destination on your phone will usually point you in the right direction.
Colectivo, Taxi or Private Transportation?
The best option depends on where you're going and how you want to travel.
Colectivos are ideal when you're travelling light, aren't in a rush and want an inexpensive way to get around. Taxis are more convenient when you want to go directly from one location to another, particularly within Puerto Morelos. Private transportation can make more sense for airport transfers, larger groups, luggage, remote destinations or experiences where timing matters.
You also don't need to choose one transportation option for your entire stay. You might walk around the beachside town, use a local colectivo to visit La Colonia, take a highway colectivo for a simple trip to Playa del Carmen and arrange private transportation for a cenote, jungle experience or group excursion.
Understanding your options gives you a lot more freedom to explore Puerto Morelos and the surrounding Riviera Maya.
