Where to Stay in Puerto Morelos: Accommodations, Areas & What to Expect

Where you stay in Puerto Morelos can completely change the feeling of your trip.

You can stay in a large beachfront resort where most of what you need is on the property, choose a smaller hotel near the town square and walk to restaurants and the beach, rent a condo or villa for more independence, or stay in La Colonia for a more local side of Puerto Morelos.

There isn't one area that's best for everyone. The right choice depends on whether you want to walk everywhere, spend most of your time at a resort, explore the Riviera Maya, travel with a group or settle into Puerto Morelos for a longer stay.

Here's what to consider before booking your accommodation.

Understanding Puerto Morelos Before You Book

One of the most important things to understand is that Puerto Morelos isn't just the beachside area visitors see in most photos.

Highway 307 divides the town into two main areas. On the east side is the beach, main square, restaurants, shops and the older seaside centre of Puerto Morelos. On the west side is La Colonia, a larger residential and commercial part of town where many locals live.

There are also large resorts along the coastline outside the central beachside town.

Before booking accommodation, look at its exact location on a map. Two properties can both advertise themselves as being in Puerto Morelos while offering completely different experiences.

Staying Beachside in Puerto Morelos

If you picture yourself walking out in the morning for coffee, wandering to the beach, having dinner near the town square and rarely needing transportation, beachside Puerto Morelos is probably the easiest choice.

This part of town has smaller hotels, condos, apartments, vacation rentals and other independent accommodations within walking distance of restaurants, cafés, shops and the Caribbean.

The biggest advantage is convenience. Puerto Morelos is very walkable on the beachside, and you can spend much of your stay without needing a car.

This is a great option for travellers who want to feel connected to the town rather than spending most of their vacation inside a resort.

Staying in La Colonia

On the other side of Highway 307 is La Colonia.

This side of Puerto Morelos feels much more residential and local. You'll find supermarkets, small businesses, restaurants, cafés, markets and everyday services alongside homes and apartments.

Accommodation can sometimes offer more space or better value than staying directly beside the beach, making La Colonia worth considering for longer stays or travellers who don't need to wake up steps from the Caribbean.

The tradeoff is location. You'll need to travel between La Colonia and the beach if you want to spend time around the main square and ocean.

Local colectivos, taxis and bicycles can make getting between the two sides relatively simple.

All-Inclusive Resorts in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos and the surrounding coastline have numerous large resorts, including many all-inclusive properties.

A resort can make sense if your priority is relaxing, spending time by the pool or beach and having restaurants, drinks and activities available without needing to organize much yourself.

The important thing to understand is that many resorts associated with Puerto Morelos are not actually within walking distance of the town square.

If exploring the town is important to you, check the property's exact location before booking and consider how you'll get into central Puerto Morelos.

You can absolutely stay at a resort and explore outside of it. Just expect to use a taxi, private transportation or another transportation option when you want to leave the property.

Boutique Hotels and Smaller Hotels

Smaller hotels can offer a very different experience from the large resorts.

Many independent accommodations around central Puerto Morelos put you within walking distance of the beach, restaurants and town square while still giving you the conveniences of a hotel.

Amenities vary significantly from one property to another. Some may have a pool, restaurant or breakfast service, while others are intentionally simple.

If you're choosing a smaller hotel, think about location first and amenities second. Being able to walk where you want to go can have a bigger impact on your trip than having a long list of hotel facilities you may never use.

Vacation Rentals, Condos and Villas

Vacation rentals are especially useful for families, groups and longer stays.

Having a kitchen gives you the option to prepare meals at home, while condos and villas may provide more living space than a traditional hotel room.

For groups, a larger property can also make the trip feel more connected because everyone has a shared space rather than disappearing into separate hotel rooms.

If you're considering a rental, check exactly what's included. Air conditioning, Wi-Fi, drinking water, housekeeping, beach equipment, parking and laundry shouldn't automatically be assumed.

Read the property details carefully and ask questions before booking if something is important to you.

Where Should Groups Stay in Puerto Morelos?

For families, wedding groups, retreats or friends travelling together, accommodation requires a little more planning.

A villa or group of nearby condos can create a more private experience, while a resort may be easier when everyone wants their own room and access to restaurants and amenities.

For weddings, retreats and private events, accommodation can become part of the overall experience. Some event properties and venues can accommodate at least part of the group, while other plans may involve keeping guests nearby and arranging transportation.

The best setup depends on the size of the group and what you're actually planning to do while you're here.

What Amenities Should You Look For?

Puerto Morelos is tropical, so air conditioning is one amenity worth checking carefully, particularly if you're visiting during the hotter months.

Reliable Wi-Fi may also matter if you're working remotely or staying for several weeks.

Beyond that, think about how you'll actually use the property. A kitchen can be valuable during a long stay. A pool may matter to families. Parking becomes important if you're renting a car. Laundry can be surprisingly useful if you're staying for several weeks.

If you're booking somewhere outside the central beach area, transportation should also be part of your decision.

Don't assume every accommodation includes the same amenities. Check the individual listing before you book.

Do You Need a Car in Puerto Morelos?

Not necessarily.

If you're staying beachside and mostly planning to enjoy Puerto Morelos itself, you can walk to many restaurants, cafés, shops and the beach.

If you're staying in La Colonia, at a resort outside town or somewhere farther from the centre, you'll need to think more about transportation.

For exploring beyond Puerto Morelos, you can use colectivos, taxis, private transportation or a rental car depending on where you're going.

You don't need a car simply because you want to explore. For many visitors, arranging transportation for particular experiences is easier than renting and driving a vehicle for the entire vacation.

Choosing the Right Area for Your Trip

Choose beachside Puerto Morelos if walking to the beach, restaurants and town square is important to you.

Consider La Colonia if you want a more residential environment, are staying longer or don't mind travelling to the beach.

Choose an all-inclusive resort if you want most of your meals, drinks and relaxation built into your accommodation.

Consider a condo or vacation rental if you want more independence, a kitchen or additional space.

For groups, retreats or weddings, look at the accommodation and experience together rather than treating them as two separate decisions.

Puerto Morelos can feel completely different depending on where you stay. Understanding that before you book makes it much easier to choose the version of Puerto Morelos you actually want to experience.
