How to Get a Telcel SIM Card in Mexico for a Long-Term Stay
If you're spending more than a typical vacation in Puerto Morelos or elsewhere in Mexico, getting a Mexican phone number can make everyday life much easier.
A local number is useful for WhatsApp, contacting local businesses, arranging transportation, making reservations and staying connected without depending on international roaming.
Telcel is one of Mexico's major mobile providers, and its prepaid Amigo service is a practical option if you're staying in Mexico for several weeks or months.
There are now two main ways to get connected: a physical Telcel SIM card or, if your phone is compatible, a Telcel prepaid eSIM.
Before You Get a Telcel SIM Card
First, make sure your phone is unlocked. If your phone is locked to your carrier at home, a Mexican SIM or eSIM may not work.
It's also worth checking whether your phone supports eSIM. If it does, you may be able to set up your Mexican Telcel line without changing your physical SIM card.
There is also an important change for 2026. Mexican mobile lines are now subject to identification requirements, so don't rely on older travel guides that say you can simply purchase an anonymous SIM and start using it.
If you're a foreign visitor or resident, check the current identification requirements when purchasing or registering your line.
Prepaid or Monthly Telcel Plan?
For many international visitors and people spending part of the year in Mexico, prepaid Telcel Amigo is the easiest place to start.
There is no long-term commitment. You add money or purchase a package when you need service, and you can choose how much you want to spend based on your data usage.
Telcel's Amigo Sin Límite packages combine mobile data with calls, texts and access to certain apps, with different packages available depending on how much data and service time you need.
This makes prepaid service useful even for a longer stay. You don't necessarily need a traditional monthly contract just because you're going to be in Mexico for several months.
Getting a Physical Telcel SIM Card
Physical Telcel SIM cards, usually called a chip in Mexico, are available through Telcel and authorized retailers.
If you want help setting everything up, going to an official Telcel location can be easier than trying to figure it out yourself.
Ask for:
“Un chip Telcel Amigo, por favor.”
Let the person helping you know that you want prepaid service rather than a monthly contract.
Because identification rules have changed, bring your passport and any Mexican identification or residency documentation you have with you.
Once the SIM is installed and your line is properly registered and activated, you'll have a Mexican phone number that you can continue using as long as you maintain the line according to Telcel's prepaid requirements.
Getting a Telcel eSIM in Mexico
If your phone supports eSIM, this has become one of the easiest options.
Telcel offers Amigo prepaid eSIMs that can be purchased online. You select an eligible Amigo Sin Límite package, provide your email address and receive the information needed to install the eSIM.
Your phone needs to be unlocked, compatible with Telcel's network and compatible with eSIM technology.
You'll also need a stable Wi-Fi connection while installing it.
One advantage of an eSIM is that you may be able to keep your home SIM active at the same time. Depending on your phone, you can use your Mexican Telcel line for local data and calls while keeping your Canadian, American or other international number available when needed.
Check your home carrier's roaming settings before doing this so you don't accidentally create expensive roaming charges.
How to Activate a Telcel Prepaid SIM
For a physical Telcel Amigo SIM, activation generally involves installing the SIM, adding an initial recharge and using the line.
If you purchase it directly from a Telcel location, ask the staff to help you make sure everything is activated before you leave.
For an eSIM, Telcel sends installation instructions to the email address used during purchase. Once the eSIM is installed and activated, your prepaid package begins its validity period.
Keep the information associated with your new Mexican phone number somewhere safe. You'll use that number whenever you recharge the line or manage your account.
How to Recharge Your Telcel Phone
One of the advantages of prepaid Telcel service is how easy it is to add more service.
You can recharge your phone at Telcel locations and many authorized retailers throughout Mexico. Convenience stores are also commonly used for phone recharges.
If you're recharging in person, tell the cashier:
“Quiero hacer una recarga Telcel.”
They'll ask for your phone number and the amount you want to add.
Double-check the phone number before paying. Once the recharge is sent to the wrong number, fixing it may be difficult.
You can also manage eligible services through Telcel's digital options, depending on your account and payment method.
Understanding Telcel Amigo Sin Límite
When you recharge a prepaid Telcel line, you'll often be using an Amigo Sin Límite package.
These packages are available at different price points and include different amounts of mobile data and validity periods. Many also include calls, SMS and use of certain social or messaging services under the conditions of the package.
If you're staying in Mexico for several months, you can simply choose the package that matches how much data you actually use and recharge when necessary.
Telcel changes its packages and promotions periodically, so check the current options rather than choosing your plan based on an old blog with outdated prices.
Can You Use WhatsApp With Your Mexican Number?
Yes.
WhatsApp is extremely useful in Puerto Morelos and throughout Mexico. Local businesses, restaurants, guides, drivers, accommodation providers and other services frequently communicate through WhatsApp.
If you already use WhatsApp with your number from home, you don't necessarily need to change your WhatsApp number just because you install a Mexican SIM.
You can keep your existing WhatsApp account while using your Telcel line for mobile data, depending on how you want your phone set up.
If you're actually relocating or want your Mexican number to become your primary contact, you can choose to update WhatsApp separately.
Do You Need a Mexican Bank Account?
You don't need a Mexican bank account simply to use a prepaid Telcel line.
If online payment options don't work with your international card, recharging in person is easy and widely available.
This is one reason prepaid service works well for people spending a few weeks or several months in Puerto Morelos. You can keep the setup relatively simple without needing to establish a complete Mexican banking and mobile contract immediately.
Is a Mexican SIM Worth It for a Long Stay?
If you're only visiting Puerto Morelos for a few days and your international plan includes affordable roaming, you may not need one.
For a longer stay, having a Mexican number and local mobile data can be extremely useful.
You'll be able to communicate with local businesses more easily, use maps while you're out, contact drivers and guides, make reservations and use WhatsApp without constantly looking for Wi-Fi.
For people who spend several months at a time in Mexico or return regularly, keeping a local prepaid number can be one of the simplest ways to make life here easier.
